Cigarettes of the Winston brand are produced by RJR Tobacco Company (named after its founder Richard Joshua "R. J." Reynolds) or its new implementation as RJR Nabisco and its branches.

The brand was created in 1954 and it became the most popular and best-selling one among cigarette trade marks in the USA. Winston owes a borough in North Caroline called Winston-Salem its name.

The Winston brand gained the leading position and held it since 1966 till 1972. Actually the founders of this brand invented a lot of good marketing tricks. In the beginning of the 50’s Edward Darr, one of the RJR Tobacco Company bosses, having come from his trip to Switzerland amazed his colleagues by telling them about filter-tipped cigarettes having an unprecedented popularity in Europe. Colleagues decided that such cigarettes could be a good finding for the US as people there knew nothing about them. So they had carried out some researches and it turned out that such cigarettes could be in demand among the nation. The only thing company had to do was to calculate cigarettes strength lest the filter should lessen the taste of tobacco.

Firstly Winston attracted public attention with its effective advertising slogan “Winston tastes good like a cigarette should.” This slogan provoked a wave of disputes in connection with the grammatical misusage of “like” in place of “as”. Their next slogan seemed to be the answer to the preceding debates - it stated “What do you want, good grammar or good taste?” After that the popularity of Winston cigarettes skyrocketed and people began to buy cigarettes in quantity.

During the first month of the campaign Winston managed to sell 6.5 billion of cigarette cartons and by 1956 it was the best cigarette brand having 31 billion sales. At the same time the debatable slogan was set to music and broadcasted.

Nowadays Winston cigarettes have left the boundaries of the US market, these cigarettes can be purchased worldwide, both in stores and online shops.
